The Brain Never Stops

چکیده

THE BRAIN IS SPONTANEOUSLY ACTIVE Surprisingly, the brain uses about 20% of the body’s energy at all times. That’s right: about one-fifth of everything you eat is for your brain. Figure 1 shows the energy consumption of the upper body and head. The dark areas show body parts that use a lot of energy while resting without movement. The brain uses a lot of energy, so it appears very dark in the image. This is also true of the heart, which needs a lot of energy to continuously keep beating. Nevertheless, the brain appears darker and thus uses more energy than the heart, the skeletal muscles, or any other organ. The brain’s high energy needs show that it is very active at all times.

Dene stop contrasts: Data from Délįnę Slavey

This paper presents the results of an acoustic study of stop contrasts in Slavey, a Dene (Athabaskan) language with a three-way laryngeal contrast. Stops in 8 speakers were measured. In addition to durational differences between the stops, burst intensity was found to be important for distinguishing aspirated stops from plain and ejective stops, and coarticulatory effects on the following vowel...

Phonotactics vs. phonetic cues in native and non-native listening: dutch and Korean listeners' perception of dutch and English

We investigated how listeners of two unrelated languages, Dutch and Korean, process phonotactically legitimate and illegitimate sounds spoken in Dutch and American English. To Dutch listeners, unreleased word-final stops are phonotactically illegal because word-final stops in Dutch are generally released in isolation, but to Korean listeners, released final stops are illegal because word-final ...

Phonological versus phonetic cues in native and non-native listening: Korean and Dutch listeners' perception of Dutch and English consonants.

We investigated how listeners of two unrelated languages, Korean and Dutch, process phonologically viable and nonviable consonants spoken in Dutch and American English. To Korean listeners, released final stops are nonviable because word-final stops in Korean are never released in words spoken in isolation, but to Dutch listeners, unreleased word-final stops are nonviable because word-final sto...

Investigating the functional communication network in patients with knee osteoarthritis using graph-based statistical models

Introduction: Osteoarthritis of the knee is the most prevalent type of arthritis that causes persistent pain and reduces the quality of life. However, no treatment alleviates symptoms or stops the disease from progressing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies can provide information on neural mechanisms of pain by assessing correlation patterns among the different regions of the...

Auditory evoked M100 reflects onset acoustics of speech sounds.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to investigate the response to speech sounds that differ in onset dynamics, parameterized as words that have initial stop consonants (e.g., /b/, /t/) or do not (e.g., /m/, /f/). Latency and amplitude of the M100 auditory evoked neuromagnetic field, recorded over right and left auditory cortices, varied as a function of onset: stops had shorter latencies and...
